What's The Focus of The Course...

Understanding How Executive Functioning Impacts Performance

In this section, we’ll explore the fundamentals of executive functioning, including what it is and how it influences students’ ability to complete tasks. We’ll break down the key components of executive function—and discuss how deficits in these areas can affect academic performance and daily functioning. You’ll also learn how executive functioning skills are integral to helping students achieve their directed goals, both in the classroom and beyond.

The Neuroanatomy and Neurodevelopment of Executive Functioning

In this section, we’ll delve into the brain’s role in executive functioning, focusing on the neuroanatomy and neurodevelopment processes that shape these critical skills. You’ll gain insight into the brain regions involved and understand how their development impacts executive function abilities like decision-making, emotional regulation, and problem-solving. This foundational knowledge will provide a deeper understanding of how executive function develops and why certain students may struggle with these skills.

Identifying Student Needs in Executive Functioning

In this section, we’ll focus on how to identify specific areas of executive function deficits in students accurately. You’ll learn methods for identifying possible needs and recognizing the executive function skills that require intervention. We’ll also discuss the common challenge of receiving vague referrals and provide strategies to help related service providers refine their approach. By the end of this chapter, you’ll have a clear framework for determining how your professional expertise can move forward with referrals.

Assessing Students in Executive Functioning Abilities

In this section, we’ll explore the assessments and resources available to evaluate students' executive function abilities. You’ll learn how to differentiate between broader executive functioning deficits and specific skill-based challenges, ensuring a more accurate understanding of a student’s needs. We’ll review various standardized tools and informal assessments that can help you create a comprehensive profile of each student's strengths and weaknesses, guiding more targeted interventions.

Intervention Methods for Developing Executive Functioning

In this section, we’ll explore effective intervention methods aimed at improving students' executive function abilities. We’ll focus on how environmental factors, treatment levels, and targeted activities can be used to promote skill development. Additionally, we’ll emphasize the importance of utilizing evidence-based approaches when designing interventions, ensuring that your methods are both practical and grounded in research. By the end of this chapter, you’ll have a toolkit of strategies to implement in various settings to support students in developing essential executive function skills.

Case Study Discussions

In the final, and most important section, we’ll take a good amount of time to discuss real-world case studies to help solidify your understanding of executive function interventions. Through detailed discussions, you’ll learn how to apply the strategies covered in the course to create consistent, meaningful interventions for your students. These case studies will provide practical insights into implementing interventions effectively, helping you build the skills and confidence needed to support students in achieving lasting success.

I'm Justin Lundstedt

As an occupational therapist with over 20 years of experience, I’ve dedicated the majority of my career to working in special education. In the past five years, I’ve focused my practice on executive functioning after recognizing the critical need for students who are missing key skills in this area. For a long time, I struggled with how to effectively integrate executive function interventions into school-based practice. But once I discovered the right approach, I gained a new perspective on the profound impact these skills can have.

This led me to develop a unique model of treatment specifically designed to help students build their executive function abilities. Now, I’m seeing the results firsthand—students who were once facing low expectations of graduation are now completing their academics and finding success in their communities. I’m passionate about sharing these insights and strategies with other professionals so that more students can reach their full potential.
